Premier Sydney-based trainer Gai Waterhouse has her eye on the $3 million prize the 2010 Cox Plate has on offer for her six-year-old warhorse Theseo following a successful barrier trail at Randwick.
Theseo, winner of more than $3 million, ran third to promising stablemate Herculian Prince over 1250m on the Kensington track.
Later, Waterhouse's US Group 1 winner Cannonball won by five lengths over the same course, while Bart Cummings' Australian Guineas winner Rock Classic also won his trial.
"He has only been in work about six weeks and this was his first trial – I thought his effort was great," Waterhouse said of Theseo.
"He's still very big and will need to trial again but he's a very happy horse.
"I'm getting him ready to resume in the Warwick Stakes (August 21) and then look at races like the Chelmsford Stakes and George Main Stakes.
"Then he will go to Melbourne for races like the Yalumba Stakes and Cox Plate."
Dual Listed winner Herculian Prince looked a stayer of the future when stringing four wins together during the autumn.
Another Waterhouse stayer being set for spring riches is AJC Derby runner-up Descarado, who ran third in Cannonball's trial.
"I liked the way he stretched out in the straight," Waterhouse said. "He's not as forward as the others so I'm not sure if he'll be ready for a race like the Warwick Stakes but he's a very exciting stayer."
Descarado's Derby conqueror Shoot Out is scheduled to fly to Melbourne tomorrow ahead of his Bletchingly Stakes return on July 31.
Stathi Katsidis is expected to ride Shoot Out in every one of his spring starts, meaning he will miss the final day of the Brisbane season, giving Larry Cassidy and Jim Byrne a potential opening in the Brisbane jockeys premiership.
